H. BENJAMIN SCHUMAN, Drums and Founder of JazzReach, Inc.

Born in Lansing, Michigan, musician and Founder & Artistic Director of JazzReach Performing Arts & Education Association, Inc., H. Benjamin Schuman began playing drums at the age of thirteen while growing up in Tucson, Arizona. Throughout high school, H. Benjamin was active in the school's music program while also playing in rock bands with fellow students.

After high school, H. Benjamin moved to Boston, Massachusetts where he enrolled at The Berklee College of Music. Upon receiving his Bachelor's degree in Professional Music from Berklee in 1990, Schuman moved to New York City where he has gone on to play with such luminaries as Junior Cook, Cecil Payne, John Ore and Big John Patton along with contemporaries, Benny Green, Cyrus Chestnut, Eric Reed, Wynton Marsalis, Brad Mehldau, Larry Goldings, Antonio Hart, Vincent Herring, Don Braden, Stefon Harris, Mark Turner, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Joshua Redman.

In 1994, with proceeds from the reluctant sale of an inherited Steinway Grand Piano, H. Benjamin, Founded JazzReach Performing Arts & Education Association, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of young people through the presentation of unique multimedia educational programs.

Since premiering its pilot program in 1997, Schuman has successfully positioned JazzReach as one of our nation's leading arts-education organizations. Its highly acclaimed programs have served over 80,000 young people and have been presented by some of America's most prestigious performing arts venues.

Schuman is also featured on Metta Quintetıs critically acclaimed debut recording, Going to Meet The Man (Koch 2002) which features eight commissioned works by Brad Mehldau, Kurt Rosenwinkle, Mark Turner, Larry Goldings and George Colligan. All works were inspired by short stories by celebrated American author, James Baldwin. Joining him on the recording are Turner, Rosenwinkle, Colligan, Mark Gross and Joshua Ginsburg.

Schuman plays Tama Drums and Sabian Cymbals and uses Vater Drumsticks, brushes and accessories and Protechtor Drum Cases exclusively.
